CheckMate: I'm Gonna Get Your Queen and Kill Your King!

Checkmate! I'm sure you are familiar of this word. It's an indication that your king is in danger and your queen might have been killed and you'll losing the battle. The word "checkmate" in chess comes from the Persian phrase "Shah Mat," which is often translated to "the king is dead", although more accurate may be "the king is trapped" or " the king is without escape" . This is the goal of a chess player.

At any age you can learn and enjoy chess. Alike with scrabble and rubiks cube the game does not need intelligent people but smart and wise people who can make combinations and techniques to trapped the king. Chess originated as charatung in India around 600 AD.

 

Chess is played by two players only each will have turns where pass is not allowed. A chess game would last hours depending on the skills of the player. Thee longest game ever recorded was between Nikolic and Arsovic, held in Yugoslavia in 1989. This chess game involved 269 moves and took over 20 hours and no one won.

Chess is for any gender as well. Women are welcome to play in the tournament. Most of the chess players are not satisfied with a ordinary chess game, some players like to set themselves a challenge. To name a few George Koltanowski played 56 consecutive games in 1960. Czechoslovakian Vlastimil Hort played blindfoldedly 550 opponents, 201 of them simultaneously wher he won 50 and drew the other 6. Dimitrije Bjelica played 312 games simultaneously, winning 219, losing 1 and drawing 92. Not everyone is a winner of course as was proved when Austrian master Josef Krejcik played 25 games simultaneously in 1910 and lost every one.

The famous Benjamin Franklin was a chess fanatic. He even wrote “ The Morals of Chess” in 1750. Chess has been included to different olympic games and The World Chess Federation (FIDE) is trying to make chess an official Olympic sport.

Chess sets are not only simple and practical, many of them are beautifully hand crafted. A unique chess set was discovered in 1170. Carved from walrus tusks, each of the characters is shown in a bad mood, ranging from anger to depression. If you are looking for unique chess pieces, Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali's did an amazing job with a design that exchanged the traditional chessmen with fingers and thumbs made of silver based on his own digits. The folding chessboard was invented by a priest who was forbidden to play chess. The priest found a way around it by making a folding chessboard. When folded together and put on a bookshelf, it simply looks like two books.

Rubik's Amazing Cubes

A toy that can boogle your mind and tickle your sense is the famous rubiks cube. Have you ever solved a 3x3x3 cube? What does it feel?

Yesterday, I tried to play the rubiks cube owned by brother. I was amazed how a six year old boy puzzle it out while I can't. A rubik's cube is a a 3-D mechanical puzzle invented in 1974[1] by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. Originally called the "Magic Cube",] the puzzle was licensed by Rubik to be sold by Ideal Toy Corp.

Like scrabble, playing rubik's cube would need a lot of concentration. Though you are just playing alone you are competing against yourself. In this game you must have a 3D visualization. It is a lso a puzzle yet instead of words it has been jumped to tiles or squares and colors.

There are a lot of things we never know about rubik's cube. At first the cube look so hard to puzzle but when you've done it once it will be easier the second time around. Because of its shape a pattern can be used. There are 43 quintillion combinations in a rubik's cube. The fastest time that a rubik's cube can be solved is about 9 seconds from a scrambled position.

 

In reality even the inventor Mr Rubik doubted if the the cube could be solved.

Right now there are variations of rubik's cube from 3x3x3 cube which was the most popular cube, the 4x4x4 Rubik's Revenge cube and the pyramid, to name a couple.

Playing a cube is addictive you don't want to stop unless you puzzled it yet the longer you are solving the puzzle the harder it is to solve. Because of too much concentration needed of course if you are not yet familiar of the ready made patterns, it is suggested that you should try to solve the puzzle for an hour and then stop. Take a nap and rest for a while.

Scrabble: Bubble your Mouth with WORDS!

Spell. Clever. Reactive. Acceptable. Boggling. Boister. Leisure. Enigmatic. Enjoy.

Words. Such a small word yet make our world goes round. There are exactly 988, 968 English words in standard dictionary as sited by Global Language Monitor. Yet, we don't use all of them especially in scrabble.

Scrabble is a word game of two to four players testing their word knowledge on a 15-by-15 grid. Each player will have a turn in forming words that could appear either in horizontal of vertical manner. All words should be acceptable in standard dictionary. And it should be correctly spelled.

Scrabble is mind boggling activity. It needs a lot of concentration and a player should be clever enough to find words that lies on tiles with either double word or tiple word score. It's not a game of how much you know but a game of technique and reactive response to the word placed by the player before you.

Aside from increasing your vocabulary, scrabble is a fun activity. It serve as a leisure to some youth who wants to have a worthwile time.

There are a lot of things we don't know about scrabble. Not only the kids are fond of scrabble also celebrities including Sting, Keanu Reeves, Moby, John Travolta and Carol Burnet. The highest known score for a single word in competition Scrabble is 392. In 1982, Dr. Saladin Khoshnaw achieved this score for the word "caziques," which means "Indian chief." The highest score obtainable by playing a seven-letter word is QUARTZY (164 points) across a triple-word-score square with the Z on a double-letter-score square.And if all the Scrabble tiles ever produced were placed in a row, they would stretch for more than 50,000 miles. Highest score ever made by a single player is 830 by Mechael Cresta. The winning word is QUIXOTRY.

The scrabble board is made of Vermont Maple. It was used to be played with tiles only.
